Kunwar Vijay Shah, a minister from Madhya Pradesh, has publicly apologized for the third time regarding his controversial remarks about Colonel Sofia Qureshi of the Indian Army. This latest apology comes as a special investigation team (SIT) formed by the Supreme Court has commenced its inquiry, deeming Shah's previous apologies insufficient. Concerns have arisen about Shah's whereabouts since an FIR was filed against him on May 15, leading to speculation about his location. The Supreme Court is set to hear the case on May 28.
Details of the Controversial Statement
During a government event, Shah sparked outrage by suggesting that the Prime Minister had sent 'a sister' to avenge the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, referencing those residing in Pakistan. This comment was made in the context of Operation Sindoor, which Colonel Qureshi led alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh on May 7. In a video message released on Friday, Shah expressed his sorrow over the tragic events in Pahalgam, stating, "I have always held immense love for my country and respect for the Indian Army. My words have hurt the community, religion, and fellow citizens; it was a linguistic error on my part."
Clarification and Previous Apologies
Shah, who has served as an MLA from Madhya Pradesh eight times, clarified that he never intended to offend any religion, caste, or community. He stated, "I regret my comments made in error and sincerely apologize to the army, sister Sofia Qureshi, and all my fellow citizens." This is not the first time Shah has faced backlash; he has previously apologized twice after criticism from opposition parties and the judiciary.
Supreme Court's Criticism
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court reprimanded Shah, labeling his prior apologies as insincere and likening them to 'crocodile tears.' The court described his remarks as 'completely thoughtless' and emphasized that, as a minister, he should uphold a higher standard. To investigate the FIR against him, the Supreme Court has established a special investigation team (SIT) comprising three senior IPS officers, including at least one woman, and has mandated the SIT to submit its report by May 28.
Colonel Sofia Qureshi's Role in Operation Sindoor
Colonel Sofia Qureshi was among the military personnel who led Operation Sindoor, which successfully destroyed nine terrorist launch pads and eliminated over 100 terrorists in response to an attack in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam on May 7.
